The Ionian Islands consist of 7 Seven islands in total but as with most Greek Holiday Islands, there are many other smaller islands in the area.  The main group of islands that is found off the west coast of Greece is Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and lastly Kythira, located off the southern tip of the Peloponnese. Particularly Corfu, Paxos and Lefkada are well known for their fabulous beaches, mild climate and lush terrain.  With plenty to do on these islands from sight seeing historical places, hiking and mountain climbing, these are perfect islands for those who want more than a beach holiday. The Zante weather (Zakynthos) is much more predictable than your local taxman is. However, days with +20C and over in January or February are not uncommon. Due to the island's geographical location Zante climate is typical Mediterranean consisting in hot and sunny summers and mild, winter.
Zante Weather

The Ionian Greek Holiday Islands are located off the western side of the Greek mainland in the Gulf of Corinth. Only the northernmost of the seven,  Kerkyra, has enough rainfall to make it fertile. The Aegean Island groups are located south of Greece map and are mountainous like the mainland.  Some of the islands, such as Samothraki originated from  volcanoes. To the southeast are the rocky islands of Lesvos, Khios and Samos.  These islands are close to Turkey.  In the central Aegean Sea, are the Northern Sporades or "scattered" islands.  Farther south are the Cyclades  - "islands in a circle."  Between the Cyclades and Turkey, there is the Dodecanese group, which includes Rhodes and other major islands.  Finally the largest Greek island, Crete, is at the far south of Greece's territory

Generally, the weather in Greek Holiday Islands is generaly hot with dry summers and mild winters. Summer peaks in July and August with temperatures averaging somewhere in the 30s on the Greek Islands – ideal for perfecting that golden tan. Luckily, the sea-breeze that blows in from the north and north-west acts as natural air-conditioning, so for the most part, makes the high temperatures bearable. In comparison, mainland Greece can rocket to above 40C and doesn’t benefit from any coastal winds, so if you’re planning a city break in Athens and don’t want to be uncomfortably hot, it’s advisable to skip the summer period
