The Corinth Isthmus connected the Peloponnese peninsula to the mainland until the Corinth Canal was constructed, effectively making it an island itself. Sparta is located on the Peloponnese peninsula and is famous for producing the Spartan warrior. Many know of the last stand by King Leonidas and his warriors at the Battle of Thermopylae. There are actually more than 6,000 Greek islands surrounding the mainland and the Peloponnese peninsula, with 5,723 of them uninhabited. The largest of the Greek islands is Crete. Crete is known for the Minoan civilization that flourished during the Bronze Age. The Greek island of Rhodes is famous for once having the Colossus of Rhodes, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC after standing for 56 years. The island of Santorini is volcanic and is part of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc.
